Fluent in French NOW A Guide to Realistic French Mastery eBook John Elkhoury

I studied French for 3 and a half years during high school because I was interested in learning a foreign language, but wanted to do something more unique and atypical than Spanish. Since then I've forgotten a lot and wanted a refresher to try and remember what I had already learned, as well as expand upon that. I don't normally buy ebooks but I wanted to check it out because I like the author's site and it wasn't expensive. There's a lot of good content in the book and it's easy to read. It's given me motivation to revise my French and a few ways to do so. A few parts felt like common sense, but John Elkhoury had a good way of justifying to write it. In general it's a worthwhile read for those of all experience levels below fluency.

Fluent in French NOW A Guide to Realistic French Mastery eBook John Elkhoury Reviews

Short, sweet, and full of good advice! A lot of the same information is on the frenchcrazy website, but it was worth the (low!) price to have it all in one place like this. Thank you!
I have been a regular reader of John Elkhoury's website (Frenchcrazy.com) for 12 months. In 'Fluent in French Now', John shares his enthusiasm and knowledge of the French language in both a humorous and helpful way. This book is excellent for anyone wanting to learn French or improve on their command of the language. John saves the reader a lot of time and effort with his expert advice and useful tips. This book will make a lot of sense to beginners and advance speakers; in fact anyone seeking encouragement or motivation will benefit by reading this book. As someone who started learning French from scratch 6 months ago, Johns book has really spurred me on and it will continue to be a useful reference that I will refer to from time to time as I work towards my goal of being Fluent in French. A very enjoyable read and well worth the money!
Firstly a bit about me to help take my review in context. I'm 35 yo, Australian, professional engineer, learning french for 2 years for no particular reason other than just loving it.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading John's ebook. I would describe it as more of a motivational tool than instructive, since it differs from most instructional aids in that it focuses on how it GOT done, not how it could or should be done. John obviously loves French, which is what endeared me to reading the book, since I myself can associate with this. I found it above all encouraging to pursue my learning as I sometimes find myself wondering whether fluency is really possible, and here's the proof!
In short, well worth the $5 for anyone at any level of french learning.
Whether you are just beginning to learn about the French language, or have been a life-long learner, this book has something for everyone. John does an excellent job breaking down the essentials to learning the French language, for those who have no idea where to begin. He also offers honest advice on how to overcome the fear of speaking French, and how to make French-speaking friends (and build long-lasting friendships!) There really is no secret formula to learning any foreign language, however this book explain in details the essential steps to mastery.

As of student of French for more than 6 years, I myself even uncovered new methods (or "hacks") to further develop and improve my vocabulary. "Fluent in French Now" really has something for everyone -- so much so that these techniques can be applied to learning any language!

John was right in saying "Speaking French is rewarding, there’s nothing like it." I would highly recommend this book to any beginner or advanced-level student looking to build or improve their knowledge of the French language.
[I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.]

“Fluent in French NOW A Guide to Realistic French Mastery” is the first book by John Elkhoury, a graduate of French who now lives and works full time in France. As I typically review fiction, this review is a bit outside my normal purview, but as a longtime student of French myself, this falls right in my wheelhouse.

First and foremost, this is NOT an academic or instructional book, at least not in the traditional sense. You will be taught, yes, but not through rote memorization of vocabulary or role-playing through different scenarios. Elkhoury describes his methodology for learning a new language, and it is a lesson in how a shift in perspective can lead to a shift in the daily outcomes of your life. He offers personal advice with anecdotal support, and the book is laden with links to digital sources that can provide additional resources for getting started on your own journey.

The most striking thing about Elkhoury’s writing style is the conversational tone of the book; in a short number of pages, he succeeded in drawing me in and delivering advice without sounding preachy or condescending. His personal stories were relevant and humorous, and he has a wealth of experience from studying abroad and living in France for an extended period of time.

Even though I already speak French fluently, I felt the lessons conveyed within the book could be applied to other aspects of life beyond picking up a foreign language. Some of the advice includes being confident enough in your abilities to put yourself out there in front of new people and, once those connections are made, to continue cultivating those friendships throughout the rest of your life. One of the side effects of learning another language is that you get exposed to the culture of its speakers, and Elkhoury really hones in on the point that people, above all else, are the reason for learning another language.

On a more practical note, while the book does not include any exercises of its own, it does help warn against several methods that are NOT particularly effective when it comes to learning French (or any other language, for that matter). “Fluent in French NOW” gives a number of hacks and tricks that can help guide you, while at the same time pointing out common pitfalls and setbacks faced by students at all levels. Whether you are a teenager just heading into college or a retiree looking to travel the world, there is applicable knowledge within this short book.

There were a few minor typographical errors, but they did not detract from the readability of the book, and I found myself at the end all too soon. In short, Elkhoury espouses the idea that attitude and self-confidence are the keys to truly mastering the French language. If you feel stuck in a rut on your path to learning French, this book is a great motivational tool with plenty of nifty support links.

5/5 stars.
