Journaling Power How to Create the Happy Healthy Life You Want to Live edition by Mari L McCarthy SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
I have done research into the medical and spiritual benefits of expressive writing for several years and was delighted to find a book like "Journaling Power" that combined the research information with a powerful case study. In addition the daily writing component helps one to sit down and start writing, a challenge for many people. So having a guidebook like this book is critical for starting and then continuing writing to find out what is hidden in your soul. I have found that writing in a prayer soaked (contemplative prayer) environment provides a stronger outcome. I have also experienced writing in community as another component to strengthen the effectiveness of this practice. Writing with others allows one the option of speaking and experiencing an additional synthesis of ideas and understanding both your own awareness as well as the group's blending of experiences and deeper insights. I am certain this book would work well as a guide for small groups writing together for added support. 5/30/2017
I've only about halfway through this book. Have been doing all the writing exercise and the "morning pages" every day. The last exercise really gave me an "aha" moment .. I think I may have figured out why I have certain tendencies that stem from my childhood. Before, I never put the two together really. I'm looking foreword to reading the rest of the book and continuing all the exercises. Worth it for me!
Mari McCarthy's journey of self discovery is the only self healing book you will need! Listening to her story invigorates your own desire to learn from your own story. "My Wake-Up Call" chapter was all the motivation I needed to get writing again. The 'Morning Pages' of Julia Cameron had been a daily practice of mine- as proven by the shelves of filled journals for over 10 years. In recent years I reviewed the journals and finally gave myself permission to release them, except for the for true gems that I kept and re-wrote into longer pieces. Thank you Mari for writing this book and for the gift of inspiration to my inner writer to get back on tract. I have lots to tell, as do we all, and I thrilled to be excited about writing once again!
I've been connected with Journaling Power author Mari McCarthy for a number of years and have observed her devotion to the craft of journaling, it has been impressive. Mari certainly has helped so many people improve the quality of their lives by introducing them to the art of journaling, and teaching them in-depth journaling skills. My philosophy on life is if you want to learn something, then learn from one who is deeply devoted to that particular skill, because they practice what they preach and walk the walk, and Mari is that. I am a therapist and have taught journaling; I have taken courses at the Center for Journal Therapy with Kathleen Adams, I believe strongly in the power of journaling. Nevertheless, reading Journaling Power has re-inspired my journaling practice and given me greater faith that journaling can heal some of the health problems I've been dealing with.
In Journaling Power, Mari points toward evidence-based research about the efficacy of journaling, including the work of James W. Pennebaker at the University of Texas. The journal practices in Journaling Power are powerful and relevant. Mari uses positive psychology to reframe and help practitioners create a mental shift. These are not fly-by-night gimmicks, but time-tested, evidence-based methods of healing. Mari displays how the journal is a multi-dimensional tool, like a Swiss army knife for the mind and spirit. Doing these practices will help anyone learn to use journaling tools with elegant simplicity. Journaling Power is ultimately a book of holistic healthcare, showing how the power of expression can restore health and wholeness. The beauty of expressive journaling is that it is "DIY" (do it yourself). I am a therapist, so I believe strongly in support and counseling, but sometimes we can (and should) also learn how to rely upon ourselves to deal with problems, and the journal is a great DIY tool to do that.
Mari has used her personal journal to heal from a serious illness, multiple sclerosis. Therefore, her life is anecdotal evidence that the process really works. From that process, she was able to completely forego the need of physicians and conventional medical treatment. Mari is careful to explain that journaling has worked well for her though it may not necessarily work the same for everyone; however, her perspective is, why not give it a shot? Mari was able to give up conventional treatments through expressive healing (though she still uses the physician for diagnostics and consulting). Yet even for those who do not want to give up conventional treatments completely, they may be able to do so partially.
I love how Mari describes the dialogue she started having with her body, particularly the dialogue with her hip and the lessons she learned by writing it out. She started to realize the deep-seated roots of her emotional challenges, going back to her childhood and the patterns developed because of the way her parents treated her and how these challenges caused her to neglect her own body and her health and contributed to serious illness as an adult. When she started journaling things began to change, writing was like a conduit to a renewed relationship with her body. When it happened, it's as though a whole new world opened up, and miraculously her health began to improve. One of the most important aspects of this journey was learning to manage the inner critic which is where the emotional and psychological benefits of the journal really come into play. The inner critic is the aspect of the personality that judges and condemns oneself, it seems to occur more in people who had critical mentors and leaders when they were growing up and developing. In counseling we refer to these tools as cognitive behavioral skills, a way to again work on yourself, DIY. I believe Journaling Power is a great book with lots of tangible skills, tools, and insights to help anyone improve the quality of their life through the use of their journal and though journaling is ancient, science is only just beginning to verify the real power of the journal for healing and well-being.
